McInnes: New facilities will be best in class
WORK has begun on Aberdeen’s new stadium at Kingsford.
The club were given the go-ahead to build a £50million complex that will include a new 20,000-seater stadium and training facilities and will mean a farewell to Pittodrie.
Dons boss Derek McInnes, who has been heavily involved in planning and campaigning for the facility, was at the site yesterday as building work got under way.
The first phase will include a training pavilion, three training pitches, two 3G pitches and two grass pitches and is expected to be completed by next summer.
McInnes said: “This is a hugely significant milestone for the club as we embark on building long-awaited, best-in-class training facilities.
“Dedicated, purpose-built facilities, adjacent to our new stadium, will be a major boost for the players and coaching staff.
“They will help us attract and retain talent as well as providing an excellent base for community engagement and footballing excellence in the north of Scotland that will inspire future generations.”
But there has been opposition from campaign group No Kingsford Stadium.
In a statement they said: “Be assured any work starting does not mean this is game over. We are fully committed to bringing this case to court via the judicial review process.”
