Magennis & Buddies will prove they’re top class

-

KYLE MAGENNIS insists St Mirren have what it takes to make the step up in class required to challenge in the Premiership next season.

Despite 4-1 defeats, their Scottish Cup displays against Aberdeen and Celtic in the past two season have boosted their belief they can be competitive in the top flight. Buddies Player of the Year Magennis admits they’ll need to show more killer instinct but the midfielder can’t wait to run out in front of huge crowds against the Old Firm.

He said: “It’s going to be brilliant to get the opportunity to test ourselves against the best and play at Ibrox and Parkhead when they are full.

“We’re stepping up to test ourselves and hopefully we can get a few results and challenge.

“I don’t see why we can’t. The last time we played Celtic and Aberdeen, I don’t think the scoreline reflected how we played against them. We matched them all over the park.

“They have good quality in the final third so that’s something we need to add going up to the top flight, being more dangerous and burying teams.”

Rising star Magennis had been linked with Jack Ross’s Sunderland before penning a contract extension last month tying him to Saints until 2021.

He said: “I’ve been at the club since I was five. I’ve shown a lot of loyalty and saw no reason not to sign for another year.”
