Kneesy does it, Titchy..

Alan has op on aching joints

- BY TOM BRYANT

ALAN Titchmarsh has been forced to have knee surgery – because of the time he spends kneeling down.

But after the ops, on both legs, the green-fingered star told how he now feels like a “spring chicken” again.

The 69-year-old said: “I have had what is known as knee arthroscopy on both my knees and my surgeon did it to investigate the reason for my knee pain.

“While he was doing it, he removed all my damaged tissue and cartilage . I had it all cleared out and they feel so much better.”

He added: “I’ve got bad knees as a result of a lot of kneeling over the years from gardening and it has got a bit frayed in there – but I am a spring chicken again now.”

Alan, who was at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, in west London, also talked about how gardening is the secret behind his youthful appearance.

He said: “I don’t use any skin products. For me, gardening is the secret to looking good. I can’t believe I am going to turn 70 next March.

“I walk a lot – I walk every day – and my wife Lynn keeps me on my toes.”

On his tips for keeping flowers and plants alive in the garden in the hot weather, he said: “I would say to use your water wisely and use it for newly planted things like fruit and veg. And don’t bother watering the lawn. Let it go brown and it will recover.”

The TV gardening star also told how his grandchildren were becoming green-fingered as they grew up.

He said: “They are aged six, five, four and three, and they are showing a love of being outside, which is where it starts.”
