NILE & FRIENDS GOT THEIR FIESTA FREAK ON
DISCO legend Nile Rodgers took over Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park last weekend for a fantastic weekend of sun-kissed tunes. His Fiesta x FOLD (Freak Out Let’s Dance) festival featured some of the top name in funk from the last five decades. Day one saw an incredible mix of disco and soul. The Pointer Sisters got the party going with a brilliant upbeat dance set, rocking out singalong classics like Jump, Automatic and Neutron Dance, while rappers De La Soul got the beat stepped up a notch with tunes like Ring Ring Ring. The star guests on Saturday night were evergreen disco legends Earth Wind and Fire, and as the sun finally set, the crowd were dancing to hits such as September and Boogie Wonderland.
Sunday featured a female-led line-up. Laura Mvula and Morcheeba were the afternoon treats, with the only disappointment being the late pullout of former Scissor Sister Ana Matronic.
A really upbeat and dancey set from Electro goddess Goldfrapp set the tone for the night. Scots star Emeli Sande was the main guest on Sunday, and fans loved every minute of her show, culminating in a great singalong Next to Me.
But the main attraction on both nights was the main man himself. Rodgers played his greatest hits, which is like the greatest hits of world music in the last 40 years.
I Want Your Love and Freak Out were interspersed with his pop tunes including David Bowie’s Let’s Dance, Daft Punk’s Get Lucky and Madonna’s Like a Virgin.
By the time of finale Good Times, nobody in the place was going to argue.
