Chaos threatens future of Union

-

IS BORIS Johnson the most selfish, despicable and morally repugnant politician to hold a great office of state?

This is the guy who was fired from a newspaper job for making up a quote, sacked from the Tory frontbench for lying over an extra-marital affair and who agreed to give a reporter’s address to a fraudster so he could beat him up.

Johnson should never have been allowed in the same room as the foreign secretary, never mind given two years in the role to trash Britain’s reputation on the international stage.

That he was given the job as a reward for running the most deceitful political campaign in British history quite neatly sums up the shower of charlatans that currently pass for a UK Government.

Whatever happens with Brexit, you can be sure the NHS will not be getting the £350million it was promised.

Even BoJo’s resignation was a masterclass in dishonesty.

The toff had signed up to Theresa May’s Brexit proposals on Friday and encouraged the rest of the Cabinet to do the same.

It was only when it appeared David Davis – who quit as Brexit Secretary on Sunday – had got the jump on him in the contest to replace May that he sprung into action.

Once again, Johnson showed he has no political ideology, no principles and no decency. His only focus is pursuing the advancement of Boris Johnson.

As Boris went AWOL to plot his next move yesterday afternoon, he should have been in an intelligence briefing about the Novichok attack that took the life of Dawn Sturgess in Wiltshire on Sunday.

The apparent murder of an innocent civilian by a foreign power is just one of the things the Government don’t have time to concentrate on because of the Brexit chaos.

At least Davis is a committed Brexiteer. He genuinely believes a hard Brexit will be better for Britain than the softer fudge May unveiled at Chequers.

Of course, the truth is any form of Brexit will be bad for Britain and the Tories are currently engaged in a civil war over which foot the country should shoot itself in.

It is a situation in which a decent opposition party would thrive. Unfortunately, such a thing does not exist.

Under Jeremy Corbyn, Labour’s only offer has been a call for a snap general election and platitudes about Brexit as fanciful as Jacob Rees-Mogg’s.

May – for all her faults – is edging towards what Brussels and most sensible people want – the softest of Brexits and the minimum damage to the economy.

The only better scenario would be staying in the single market and the customs union. It’s what Nicola Sturgeon has been calling for so it would have the extra advantage from a UK perspective of disarming her call for IndyRef2.

The Tories are destroying themselves. The question is whether they will destroy the UK in the process.
