Jamie’s in the mix for more glory at Wimbers

- BY JONATHAN VEAL

JAMIE MURRAY is within touching distance of a third mixed doubles crown at Wimbledon after storming into the final with Victoria Azarenka.

The Scot, who triumphed with Jelena Jankovic in 2007 and Martina Hingis last year, was set to give the mixed doubles a miss this time to focus on the men’s event.

But the chance to partner two-time Australian Open winner Azarenka persuaded him to take part.

And it has proven to be a wise decision after he bowed out of the men’s doubles in the last eight with Bruno Soares.

Murray and Azarenka teamed up to see off British youngsters Jay Clarke and Harriet Dart 6-2 6-2 yesterday.

And they now face a clash with Alexander Peya and Nicole Melichar in tomorrow’s showpiece on Centre Court.

Thrilled Murray said: “It is brilliant, we are really excited to be in the final.

“We played a really good match from start to finish. We didn’t give them a chance and it feels good.”

Belarusian ace Azarenka has seen her career stall due to a custody battle over her 18-month-old son.

And the ex-world No.1, who beat Murray’s brother Andy in the mixed doubles final at the 2012 Olympics, is thrilled to be back at the top again.

Azarenka said: “It has been great. After not playing for so long to go through these emotions again is what I needed.”
