ST MIRREN WIN 3-2 ON PENS in the build-up to the game, hopes his players will benefit from the 90-minute workout.

He said: “We give them a couple of days off now which they deserve because they haven’t had any time off in three weeks.

“They have put some shift in for me and I thought they actually finished the game quite strong.”

Clarke started new signings Stuart Findlay and Ross Millen, while Stubbs handed out debuts to Cole Kpekawa, Paul McGinn and Hayden Coulson.

St Mirren had the better start but Kilmarnock should have grabbed the lead on 13 minutes as Jordan Jones pounced on a Jack Baird mistake.

He cut it back for Lee Erwin but the Killie striker’s shot was well saved by Craig Samson.

Great work at the other end from St Mirren’s Ryan Flynn saw the midfielder cross for Danny Mullen but he couldn’t get a toe on the ball as it flashed across the face of goal.

It should have been 1-0 to the Buddies when Killie left-back Calum Waters headed a poor clearance attempt into the path of Cammy Smith but his volley bounced onto the bar.

The visitors were doing all the pressing and Jordan Kirkpatrick sent a curling shot goalwards but it sailed just over the crossbar.

Eamonn Brophy was given his first chance of the game as Gary Dicker sent a teasing ball over the top but his volley was just off target.

St Mirren stopper Baird missed a great chance at the other end when he dragged his shot wide. Killie were struggling under the pressure and Cameron MacPherson forced the very best from Jamie
