Scotland happy to be rid of unwelcome

-

BY COLETTE CRAMPSEY reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk DONALD Trump jetted out of Scotland last night as the country bid good riddance to the controversial president.

Ahead of his departure from Prestwick airport on Air Force One just after 4pm, the US leader played a final round of golf at his Turnberry course in Ayrshire in dreary conditions.

It seemed he wasn’t bothered by the rain, having already received a dreich “welcome” from protesters during his three-day UK trip.

Unlike Saturday, there were no anti-Trump campaigners around as the president strode on to the course with his son Eric to tee off at about 9am.

Teams on buggies carrying his golf equipment scurried around them while security personnel looked on and armed police kept watch from a sniper tower.

Meanwhile the grounds surrounding Turnberry remained on lockdown, with police vans and high security covering the area.

A queue of cars backed up the road to the resort as fed-up drivers waited to get in the entrance.

Police carried out thorough car searches and passengers were visibly unhappy at the inconvenience. Officers frisked motorists and checked under the bonnets, boots and inside each vehicle, causing lengthy waits.

A sniffer dog and police horses were also on patrol.

One driver, who seemed keen for all the commotion to end, said the delay was “annoying”.

A local said they felt uneasy seeing armed police so near to their home.

She said: “There have been hundreds of police here since Wednesday. It’s been hectic and unlike anything we’ve ever seen, especially for a quiet place like this.

TURNBERRY LOCAL ON POLICE PRESENCE

“There’s usually only one car parked in the car park beside our house and these past few days it’s been packed full with police vans.

“The only thing I don’t like is the snipers, it’s very unsettling to see that.”

Trump spent Saturday night and Sunday at Turnberry after meeting Theresa May and the Queen in a tour that took place amid mass protests against his policies across the UK.

However, one Trump supporter, who turned up on Sunday to welcome the president, slammed the protests as “embarrassing”. Wearing a red Make America Great Again cap, David Mason, 30, from East Kilbride, said: “I find it disgusting that we claim to be a society that is tolerant and diverse but just because he (Trump) has different views we don’t want to let him into the country.

“Irrespective of his views and beliefs, he’s invited to the country so people should be more welcoming.”
