Poll highlights fears over Brexit

-

OUR poll today shows serious concern among voters that the Brexit process will amount to a “power grab” of European Union functions that ought to be devolved to Scotland.

It is testimony to the persistence of the SNP that the phrase has entered the lexicon because the UK Government are adamant no such move is taking place and that Holyrood will be much enhanced by the retrieval of powers from Brussels.

But the figures for those backing the argument that there has been a devolutionary betrayal are roughly in line with party support so should not to be too surprising.

What the poll does highlight is the confusion, fear and uncertainty caused by Brexit.

Confusion and uncertainty, it should be said, that Theresa May only adds to with the shapeshifting agenda to try to get around the wingnuts and fundamentalists in her own party to seal a deal with the EU.

There has never been a time when the prospects for peacetime Britain have looked so bleak. A hard Brexit would set off an explosion in the engine room of the economy and even the softest Brexit will leave us reduced diplomatically, economically and politically. A power grab might be the least of our worries if Brexit goes ahead.

MORE than four in 10 Scots believe the Tories are planning a “power grab” from Holyrood after Brexit, according to a new poll.

Exclusive research for the Daily Record shows the SNP are winning the public argument in the dispute over whether powers brought back from Brussels should go to Westminster or Holyrood.

Conservative UK Government ministers say 24 of the 153 powers covering devolved areas must initially be run from Westminster.

In a blow for Scots Tory leader Ruth Davidson, the Survation poll of BY DAVID CLEGG more than 1000 Scots show 41 per cent believe the UK Government’s actions do amount to a power grab.

In contrast, only 34 per cent believe there is no power grab. The remaining 25 per cent aren’t sure.

Last night, the SNP seized on the poll to demand the Tories halt their plans. Deputy leader Keith Brown said: “While the Tories try to play the people of Scotland for fools, a clear majority are wise to their planned power grab over Holyrood. The arrogance of the Tories to think they can rip up the devolution settlement and transfer powers to Westminster is getting short shrift from voters.”

But a Scottish Tory spokesman hit back: “The SNP are very deliberately spinning a lie about a so-called power grab. As more powers flow to Holyrood, people will see straight through this inexcusable deception.”

Survation interviewed 1002 Scots online between July 5 and 10.
