NADIYA’S FAMILY FAVOURITES

BBC2, 8pm IT was only three years ago that Nadiya Hussain won the hearts of the nation as she stormed to victory in The Great British Bake Off. Now she’s such a permanent fixture on our television screens, it’s hard to imagine she hasn’t been presenting cookery shows forever. The mum of three is a total natural in front of the cameras, making this latest series about cooking for the family a tasty treat. She’s one of us, too.

“I don’t feel a pang of guilt,” she says, dolloping a massive spoonful of cream into a pot. Although, she did recently reveal she sometimes only eats one meal a day, so perhaps not.

But as TV cooks go, she manages to bring Nigella’s enthusiasm (without sultry spoon-licking), Jamie’s need for speed and Mary’s love of food for all the family.

“This is the kind of pie that says ‘I love you’,” says Nadiya, cutting into a samosa pie.

Elsewhere, she meets Cornish pasty amateur world champion, Gillian, and has a go at making her own.

Nadiya also whips up some cheese biscuits with tomato jam and wrestles with a huge pot of prawn saffron biryani.

And there’s a demo of her favourite family breakfast – chai spiced vermicelli.

OK, let’s be honest, no one normal is crunching vermicelli noodles or toasting coconut flakes for breakfast. We’re lucky if we can lob two Weetabix into a bowl.

But at least while we’re watching, we’re full of resolve.
