Dad’s way to do it as Djokovic credits son for firing him to glory

-

NOVAK DJOKOVIC revealed fatherhood has driven him to get back to the top of the game.

The Serb rated his 13th Major triumph alongside his first Wimbledon win after battling a back from elbow surgery to stroll to a 6-2 6-2 7-6 victory over Kevin Anderson yesterday.

And it was all the more special for Djokovic that three-year-old son Stefan was on Centre Court to see him lift the trophy.

He said: “It feels amazing because for the first time in my life I have someone screaming, ‘daddy, daddy’.

“It was one of, if not the biggest, motivation I’ve had for Wimbledon this year.

“He’s under five so he couldn’t watch the matches live but we were hoping if I hold the trophy that he could be there to witness it, so I couldn’t be happier.

“I’m very emotional for him being there and my wife obviously and my whole team.

“There were several moments where I was frustrated and questioning whether I can get back on the desired level or not.

“It’s usually in a struggle that you get to know yourself and a chance to rise like a phoenix.”

Anderson may have been given a tennis lesson by Djokovic but he took heart from fulfilling his ambition to break into the top five in the world rankings.

He said: “Two-and-a-half years ago we set up a WhatsApp chat called top-five Kev so I’m very proud of that achievement.”
