EUR TIME IS UP YANKS

-

JUSTIN ROSE believes he can smash America’s Major domination and spark a magical 20th anniversary party in Scotland.

Europe’s No.1 hope at Carnoustie is adamant the time has come for the Yanks to be spanked.

Heading into the 147th Championship, the United States contingent have a fierce stranglehold on the world game.

Gunslingers Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Patrick Reed have shared the last five Majors between them.

Rose, though, feels the tide can turn on the Angus coastline.

The Englishman is second-favourite for the Championship and can also take Dustin Johnson’s World No.1 spot by lifting the Claret Jug.

Rose, who will eyeball Spieth on the first two days having been drawn in the same group, is ready to rock. He said: “I don’t mind expectation. It’s self-inflicted pressure. I expect to create an opportunity this week.

“I saw I was playing with Jordan. I haven’t thought about him being the defending champion.

“The golf course doesn’t know who’s the defending champion and it’s a good draw for me. I like playing with Jordan and the American boys in the world rankings and on the golf course are performing really well.

“They’re spurring each other on but it would be good to kind of see a change of the tide.

“They’re on a great run right now but there’s no reason why a European player shouldn’t come through this week.”

If Rose does get his hands on the Claret Jug, it will bookend a superb two decades in the game.

At the age of 37, it’s 20 years since the Olympic and former US Open champion turned professional and started a rollercoaster journey.

Rose laughed at finally putting his Gold Medal away after taking a bit of grief from the lads and said: “It was fun for a bit but I got a sense the boys were getting irritated after two or three months of doing it. It’s now resting quietly at home.”
