Man by Man

- GARY RALSTON

RANGERS Allan McGregor 7 A virtual spectator in the first leg but calmed nerves of his team-mates with a few solid stops, not least at the end. James Tavernier 7 Rangers looked most dangerous down the right, thanks largely to his efforts. But his passes needed a penalty-box poacher to wreak most havoc. Connor Goldson 7 Composed and authoritative at the heart of the defence, his distribution also caught the eye, especially those raking diagonals. Nikola Katic 6 No frills from the Croatia Under-21 starlet who used his positional sense to good effect to tuck in behind his full-backs and sweep up any danger. Jon Flanagan 6 Conservative but consistent. A right-footer on the left side denies his team width but he was too experienced ever to be in danger of being defensively exposed. Ross McCrorie 6 Guarded possession jealously from his central midfield berth. It was a no-risk strategy but disciplined and mature as he kept others in front of him well supplied. Daniel Candeias 5 Something of an off night. Struggled to make a meaningful creative contribution and final ball in wide areas was too often sloppy. Ryan Jack 7 Authoritative and demanding on the ball. Always looked to lace forward passes with creative menace. Fit again and proving an asset. Josh Windass 5 Took up some decent positions wide on the left and worked hard both sides of the ball. Still tends to take a touch too many when he needs to be more composed. Alfredo Morelos 5 Another frustrating night for the striker who looked forlorn. Needs ice in his veins when chances are few and far between but is too often dazzled by the whites of the goal net. Jamie Murphy 5 Played in more central role but was out of sync in trying to link with those around him in attacking areas. Never hid but the passes and flicks just never came off.

Subs: Glenn Middleton – on for Windass in 64 minutes and missed glorious chance to put the Macedonians out of their misery, 2. Ovie Ejaria – brought new energy to the midfield as Candeias’ replacement, 3. Andy Halliday – given the dying embers as Rangers saw the game out, 1.
