Bidders go wild for wolf photo to raise £140k

IT ALL JUST CLICKS FOR PHOTOGRAPHER

- BY KEITH McLEOD

THIS striking image has helped raise £140,000 for great causes after it was sold at auction during Michelle Obama’s visit to Edinburgh.

The Usual Suspects, by Scots photo-artist David Yarrow, was taken on Burns Night in Montana, USA.

It was snapped up at the Hunter Foundation auction in Edinburgh where former first lady Michelle made her first overseas public appearance since leaving the White House.

Judy Murray, Mark Beaumont and Beverley Knight were among the guests attending a fundraising dinner, organised by Scots tycoon Sir Tom Hunter, where the VIP shed light on her time in the White House in conversation with Scottish Olympic gold medalist Katherine Grainger.

The photo, taken in Montana this year, was another star of the show.

It was bought by London property developer Nick Candy for £70,000 before a rival bidder got lucky when Yarrow revealed that an identical print was available at the same price.

The photographer said of taking the image: “The first time I set foot in Montana, I knew I was in a very special place.

“It was not just the majesty of the scenery, it was the characters that lived there.

“No state embodies the final frontier of America more than Montana.

“I wanted ex-convicts, wolf wranglers, wannabe Davey Crocketts and crazy old mountain men that are drunk by 11am.

“This week we had our reward. I think we nailed it!”
