DERK: RONNY RUINED ME IN GLASGOW

-

BY ALAN MARSHALL CELTIC flop Derk Boerrigter has blamed Ronny Deila for ruining his career and admitted he stayed at Parkhead to get rich.

The former Ajax star cost the Hoops £3million in July 2013, before he was quietly released in 2016 with a year to go on his contract.

His spell in Glasgow was a nightmare and he was one of the most financially disastrous signings in the club’s history.

The winger made just eight starts, which worked out at an incredible £587,500 per start for his transfer fee and hefty £12,000-per week wages.

Boerrigter, who is still only 31, has previously blamed Celtic’s medical staff for failing to diagnose his broken ankle.

But he has now turned his ire on former boss Deila, who had no faith in the player he inherited from Neil Lennon.

He said: “I had some offers to get back into the game but before that I was in Celtic’s reserves.

“They wanted to get rid of me but I stayed until the end. Honestly it was because of the money.

“The salary was just too good to give up, especially when you consider what I used to earn back home.

“We negotiated with Celtic when I was leaving.

“They wanted to give me three months so I said I would stay. In the end, I got the full year’s salary.

“Celtic went bad for me because of injuries and a manager who couldn’t do anything right, Ronny Deila.

“He was a Norwegian and I don’t like criticising people because I am not like that.

“However, he had a way of playing football that didn’t suit me.

“He wanted all his wingers to come inside to give the full-backs space to go forward. I would always rather take a player on but I wasn’t allowed.

“That’s how it goes in football. One manager likes you, another doesn’t.

“I had a great manager when Frank de Boer was in charge at Ajax but Ronny actually made me a worse player.”
