SELFISH SAMMON Well ace intent on goal spree

-

CONOR SAMMON has vowed to be more selfish in a bid to hit the Premiership goal trail this season. The Irish striker has signed a season-long loan at Motherwell from top-flight rivals Hearts. And the 31-year-old opened his account for the Steelmen with two goals in Tuesday night’s Betfred Cup win over Queen of the South. Sammon warned there is plenty more where that came from as he aims to make his mark after suffering the pain of relegation from the top flight with Partick Thistle last season. He said: “I have learned to be more selfish as a striker. “In the past I have been guilty of being unselfish but as a striker you are judged on goals.

“Kris Boyd has a great quote when he says that the only shots you regret are the ones you don’t take and I think that is so true.

“You come off the pitch sometimes thinking about a chance you had to get a shot off or take someone on.

“So I have to be more ruthless and single-minded at times.

“I am looking to build upon that and I will try to remember that over the course of the season – and hopefully it can get me many more goals.”

Sammon is playing for his future BY COLIN PATERSON with his Jambos deal up at the end of the season. But he is relishing the chance to star for the Steelmen who can qualify for the next round of the Betfred Cup as Group G winners with a win at Clyde on Saturday.

After Tuesday’s victory Fir Park boss Stephen Robinson hailed Sammon’s strike partnership with Ryan Bowman and said: “Conor was superb.”

Sammon added: “I want to come here and make it work and I know it is up to me to fit in with the rest of the group and hopefully add something to it.

“You are always trying to impress and I am my own harshest critic.

“I set myself standards and I want to try to achieve them.

“This is a massive season for me but it is one that I am looking forward to.

“It will be a big challenge for me to get a lot of games and to score goals but I want to do the best I can.

“I am an optimist so I know if you keep working hard every day then good things will happen and I always believe that.

“Football is a simple game that we complicate, so it is good to get back to basics and be enjoying my football.

“Scoring goals and helping the team win – there is nothing better than that.”
