Playing the system

RECORD reader Alfie Mullins seems to abhor the idea of making people work instead of claiming benefits, but the system is in dire need of reform.

I’m an employer and recently advertised a vacancy.

I received 15 applicants. Out of those, 12 didn’t answer their phone or reply to emails inviting them for interview and two didn’t show up for the interview arranged.

I’m convinced this is because they are sending applications to comply with the rules of jobseekers allowance but have no intention of taking a job.

It is time the DWP started doing checks on lazy unemployed people and made them attend interview and take up employment.

As a taxpayer, I am sick of people choosing unemployment as a career – get them out to work. Catriona Fysome, Hamilton Labour the issue IF RECORD reader Alfie Mullen thinks farmers get free labour by taking on fruit pickers, he must think the same of all employers.

By law, they must pay the minimum wage so, depending on your age, you’ll be paid the same as everyone else for each hour you work. I agree that wages should be higher but to get the workshy into employment, they need to be doubled and maximum benefits halved.

We all know this isn’t going to happen any time soon so they will continue to rake it in at the expense of others. M
