Survival is still Well’s main focus

-

HE’S the lifelong supporter of Motherwell who struck gold by becoming the club’s chief executive.

Alan Burrows’s dream is to deliver silverware for the Steelmen but he insists survival in the Premiership will always be the name of the game on his watch.

Steve Robinson’s men fell agonisingly short last season when they reached both domestic cup finals for the first time in 67 years.

The 35 year-old said: “Surviving is our first port of call but our targets are certainly different to that.

“We want to get into the top six but we need to make sure we stay in the Premiership. Our priority is to make sure we stay in the division. A lot of clubs in the bottom half of the league will be the same.”

While survival is the main focus Burrows will allow his thoughts to drift to cup glory from time to time.

He said: “Is it still a dream of mine to see Motherwell lift a trophy? Of course it is. I had visions of us lifting the League Cup and Scottish Cup.

“The Friday night before BY ANTHONY HAGGERTY both finals I had convinced myself we were going to win. I was desperate for us to win it because it would have been a legacy for the club.

“Think how many people became Motherwell fans because of the 1991 cup win. It was one of my first games and it would have been the same for a lot of young people this year.

“Sadly it wasn’t to be but we haven’t given up hope of doing it again. The style of the team suits cup football so you never know.”

Burrows, meanwhile, said the Fir Park club will continue to support Suicide Prevention.

The club, alongside Airdrie, Albion Rovers and Clyde will all display the Suicide Prevention North Lanarkshire logo on the back of their strips during the season.

He said: “Suicide is a subject deeply important to Motherwell and that is why we have supported this campaign for a number of years. If it helps save one person’s life then everything we do has been worthwhile.”
