Our Best Ever Burger (550g), £3.50, Marks & Spencer Number of patties: Cost per burger: Cooked to a perfect brown colour and stayed the same chunky size, providing a snug fit for burger buns. Tasted of good quality steak with just the right hint of seasoning. They didn’t need any relishes or extras as they were succulent and delicious on their own. One of the most expensive, but worth it.

How a burger should be. The Best Scotch Beef Quarter Pounders (454g), £3, Morrisons Number of patties: Cost per burger: Smaller than the other burgers and they shrank a bit during cooking, so needed rolls rather than larger burger buns. Cooked to an even colour and tasted meaty with a slight peppery flavour. We found a couple of crunchy bits in the mix but not a bad burger.

Decent taste for the cost. Taste the Difference Picanha Steak Beef Burgers (340g), £3.50, Sainsbury’s Number of patties: Cost per burger: Looked tempting before they were even cooked. Created a few flames on the barbecue as they oozed a bit while they cooked but they came out an appetising brown and only shrank a tiny bit. Very tasty and a lovely texture. Went down a treat. THE battle of the burgers has heated up as stores launch barbecue favourites with names such as ‘Best Ever’ ‘Luxury’ and ‘Ultimate’. But do they live up to their grand titles or is it all just a load of overcooked hype? From Asda, Aldi and Lidl to Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose, we have munched our way through a meat mountain to find out which burgers were a sizzling success and which were flaming awful. Here’s our verdict on the premium beef burgers on sale at 10 retailers. Deluxe Ultimate Aberdeen Angus Beef Steak Burgers (340g), £2.19, Lidl Number of patties: Cost per burger: Smelled and looked good as they cooked to a nice even colour and stayed virtually the same size. But they were a bit greasy and chewy and didn’t have the rich, expensive, meaty flavour of other burgers on test.

A bit disappointing.
