EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
BBC2, 9am FOR 12 days in the summer of 2014, Scotland sparkled in the eyes of the world during a stonking Commonwealth Games.
This week, Glasgow plays the good host again as elite athletes return for the European Championships.
Shared with Berlin, the 11-day, jam-packed event brings together the existing European championships of athletics, swimming, cycling, rowing, triathlon, gymnastics and golf into one multi-sport bonanza. The Hazel is in Glasgow Beeb has it fully covered, on TV, radio and online. A new generation of legends were created in 2014 as the medals rolled in for Scotland but this time our heroes are part of the GB team, with high hopes in cycling and swimming in particular. Hazel Irvine is in Glasgow to introduce the best of the day’s early action, with Great Britain’s Olympic and world swimming champion Adam Peaty the headline name in the pool. Peaty goes in the heats of his pet event, the 100m breaststroke, while the morning’s rowing includes men’s and women’s semi-finals in the pair and four. He’ll be joined by Scotland’s Commonweath gold winner Duncan Scott and Mark Szaranek. It’s also the preliminary stage of the team event in synchronised swimming. Later on BBC1, expect high velocity in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome as some of Europe’s leading track cyclists begin their quest to be crowned continental champions. World and European champion Katie Archibald and her brother John are among this week’s Scottish hopefuls. Clare Balding is on hand to host this evening’s unmissable action.
