ANDY LEFT HIGH AND CRY BY SCHEDULE

TENNIS

-

ANDY MURRAY showed the strain of his return to tennis by sobbing into his towel after his third win in a week at the Citi Open.

And the emotional Scot then threatened to pull out of the tournament in Washington after finishing his match at 3am local time due to a scheduling farce.

Murray saw off Romanian Marius Copil 6-7 6-3 7-6 – his third successive three-set win.

The 31-year-old has spent eight hours and 11 minutes on court to BY NEIL McLEMAN reach the quarter-finals in only his third tournament back since January hip surgery.

And he sat in his chair and cried uncontrollably for several minutes.

Murray said: “It was just the emotions coming at the end of an extremely long day and match.”

The tournament has been hit by storms and flooding and Murray was last night scheduled to return to court at 9pm local time to play Aussie Alex de Minaur.

But he said: “I don’t know how players are expected to recover.

“My body doesn’t feel great. Finishing at three in the morning isn’t good for anyone involved.”

Murray has pulled out of next week’s Rogers Cup in Toronto and will now travel to Cincinnati to prepare for his next event – the Western and Southern Open.”
