The acid test is still to come. It’s going to be fascinatin­g to see how it goes. Gerrard has a monumental task to overhaul Rodgers and quite frankly it’d be a real shock if it happened.

The first of Gerrard’s acid tests comes at Pittodrie tomorrow. What a season opener that is.

Aberdeen were outstandin­g against Burnley. It’s easy to heap praise on gallant losers but they were genuinely excellent in both ties. I’m not going to get back into the debate about making a point to English football.

Hearts look strong. Having witnessed their Betfred Cup win over Inverness last weekend, they might have found a real talent in striker Uche Ikpeazu. Levein has strengthen­ed and they will push on.

Kilmarnock were the story of the season last term with their brilliant recovery under Clarke.
