TOMORROW, 1PM, SKY SPORTS Ibrox icon Gough got Goldson up for a fight

-

CONNOR GOLDSON has revealed a pep talk from Rangers legend Richard Gough has inspired the current squad in their bid to become modern day greats.

The Ibrox defender made the most of his chat with the Gers hero before Thursday’s Europa League clash with Osijek.

Goldson played a key role as Steven Gerrard’s men sealed their spot in the third qualifying round but the former Brighton man knows what it would mean to be part of a squad to bring silverware back to Govan for the first time in eight years.

The 25-year-old said: “It was really good talking to Richard. He told me a few things guys like Walter Smith used to say. We spoke before the game and he told me not to worry if we didn’t score early on, just concentrate on doing your job. He said I’d done well so far. I appreciated hearing it from someone like Richard.

“Rangers’ history has been built by guys like him and it’s brilliant to have them around. It gives us something to aspire to and work towards.

“Everyone is here to win things for this club and listening to those guys can only inspire us.”

Goldson insisted Rangers won’t settle for second this season – in any tournament.

He said: “It’s a long season and there’s a lot of competition but we have to believe we’re good enough to win any competition we are in. We want to compete for the league and cups, while doing well in the Europa League.

“We want to keep fans happy.”

‘The Dons were magnificent over the two legs and only the quality of player saw them exit. They can hold their heads high ’

STEVEN GERRARD has hinted Wes Foderingham could seal his Rangers exit within the next seven days. The Rangers boss has made Allan McGregor his No.1 and also has Jak Alnwick as back-up. Foderingham is a target for several clubs, including Aston Villa and Leeds, and the 27-year-old could go before the English window shuts on Thursday. Gerrard said: “In terms of the experienced goalies, they probably won’t want to stay to be part of three. I’m sure they are trying to sort the situation out.” made no improvement whatsoever in the last two years and won’t spend their fortunes to improve the obvious weaknesses.” Finally, some soothing words of affirmation from

who said: “The Dons were magnificent over the two legs and only the quality of player saw them exit. They can hold their heads high after putting up a magnificent fight against big-spending Burnley.”

The SPFL season kicks off this weekend and Gers fans are beginning to purr over the direction their team is heading under the management of Gerrard.

said: “I love what I am seeing from Gerrard’s Rangers. We look to have a really strong central defence with the best keeper in the league. We will push Celtic all the way this year – maybe even to 55...”

said: “Finally, we have a Rangers team showing the side of the game we used to take for granted – commitment, character and a will-to-win. We’re still not perfect middle to front but the spine of the team is looking strong and the investment in Niko Katic could turn out to be the shrewdest the club has made in years.

“Celtic will still be favourites for the title but with another couple of additions I’m backing this squad to at least push them close.”

said: “I’m backing Rangers to make a statement of intent at Pittodrie. The ground held no fears for us when we were struggling and Rangers look so much stronger under Gerrard. A good win would set the tone for weeks to come.”

said: “A perfect start to Gerrard’s tenure as Rangers boss would be to come down from Aberdeen on Sunday night with three points in the bag.” CALL THE HOTLINE TOMORROW FROM 11 TILL NOON on: 0141 309 3306 or email: hotline@dailyrecord.co.uk
