Women are shaking up events scene
THE Glasgow Cocktail Weekend is not only a great excuse for a night out – it’s empowering women in the male-dominated events industry.
That’s according to Jenn Nimmo-Smuth of Electric Shores, and Nicola Moir, 35, of award-winning Scottish communications consultancy Moir Media.
The pair teamed up to host the unique weekend of high-end bars, cocktails and parties to showcase Glasgow’s finest independent food and drink operators.
Jenn, 32, said: “Nicola and I first met at a women’s networking dinner. The premise was to get all the amazing women I’ve met in the creative industries together to see what collaborations could be forged. A lot of ideas were born that night, one of them being Glasgow Cocktail Weekend.
“With Nicola’s background in hospitality and tourism and mine in music and events, we developed the idea of showcasing some of the best music and venues that Glasgow has to offer.
“We want to show that women can be as powerful as they want to be. if you have a great idea for an event, just do it. We came up with Glasgow Cocktail Weekend and went for it and it looks like being a huge success – we have a host of other ideas and BY MICKEY McMONAGLE we’re out to make our mark and urge other women to do the same.”
The concept is simple – buy a £10 wristband and you can enjoy cocktails for a fiver in some of Glasgow’s coollest bars.
Nicola said: “This is an event organised by women for everyone.
“There aren’t enough women on festival bills and in the music industry but it’s also important to recognise the lack of women and opportunities for women in the events industry. We are looking to change things with the events Jenn and I collaborate on.
“We wanted to create an event that showcases the charm of Glasgow and why it has the best bars, venues and homegrown musical talent. With the spotlight on the best operators across venues like Nonya, Rioja to newcomer Five March, there are more than 100 signature £5 drinks to discover. Glasgow Cocktail Weekend is one of many events Jenn and I have coming up.”
On top of that, there’s is a party each night at The Rotunda with live music from DJs and acts such as Rebecca Vasmant. ●The Glasgow Cocktail Weekend runs from Thursday to Sunday. For tickets, go to glasgow cocktailweekend.co.uk
