WHEN soldiers head away on operations abroad it can be tough for the Army spouses left behind.

There’s the worry their loved one could be facing danger – and the stress of day-to-day life as a military wife.

A photograph­ic exhibition coming to the Edinburgh Fringe, called Not Just a Wife, celebrates the role of military spouses, their resilience and skills as well as the challenges they face.

Photograph­er Wendy Faux decided to mark her 50th birthday by photograph­ing 50 fellow Army spouses for the exhibition going on show as part of Army @ The Fringe in August.

The women and two men featured reveal the challenges they’ve faced, from losing their careers to coping with separation, anxiety and learning new skills.

Wendy is married to James, 46, who is serving with The Rifles. The couple have four children – Being married to a soldier comes with many not seeing a loved one for weeks and even mo and trying to raise a family without suppo careers on the back burner to raise their c photograph­ed 50 women and men married Freddie, 18, Georgia 16, Maddi 14 and Jessica, 12.

She said: “I hit 50 and we’d ju moved house and someone as me what did I do? I said, ‘I’m ju a wife.’

“I was so cross with myself because I’ve done so much.

“I’ve heard other people say they’re identified by what thei spouse does. So I thought I’m going to look into what other spouses do.”

Wendy, who lives in Oxfordshir­e, said: “I was astonished at this pool of talen that follows the Army around.

“Since then, I’ve met spouse married to the other armed services and it’s the same story
