Cruel bureaucrats add to Luchy’s pain

-

THE heartlessness of the Home Office never ceases to amaze.

From the Windrush scandal to more immigration blunders than you care to remember, this UK Government department are frequently responsible for causing misery.

Yet even the most cynical observer will be surprised at the breathtaking cruelty in the case of Luchy Lopez-Hammann.

The 52-year-old’s husband Andreas is dying in a Scottish hospital. The German national took ill during the wedding of Scottish relatives on Saturday.

He is now on a life-support machine at Hairmyres hospital in East Kilbride.

But because Luchy was born in Peru, she has been blocked from entering the country to see her husband.

Requests for a fast-track visa have fallen on deaf ears and the distraught wife has been told it will be the weekend at the earliest before it is issued.

This is clearly a case when compassion and common sense should determine the Home Office response.

Luchy is not trying to take advantage of Britain. She doesn’t want to work here and there is no prospect of her overstaying her visa.

She just wants what any wife would want – to be beside her sick husband.

That the Home Office have not made this happen is a disgrace and sends a terrible message about the way the UK treats foreigners.

There is no rational explanation for Luchy’s treatment. Just a brutal bureaucracy that has lost any semblance of human compassion.
