Diabetes risk of low-carb, high-fat diet
GOING on the low-carb, high-fat Keto diet could increase the risk of diabetes, a study found.
Ketogenic diets have been used by a host of stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian, Madonna, Jennifer Aniston and Sir Mick Jagger.
Followers say the low carbs and high fat turns the body into a calorie-busting machine by cutting out carbohydrates so the body burns fat for energy.
It involves replacing white bread, pasta and grains with high amounts of cream and butter.
But a study at university ETH Zurich found that while the diet leads to weight loss, it may cause an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. This contradicts earlier studies that a lowcarb drink based on the diet could prevent diabetes.
