CONNOR SYME watched Jamie Donaldson make the shot of his life to seal Europe’s Ryder Cup victory at Gleneagles in 2014.

And the European Tour rookie from Fife stood on the same spot during the European Team Championships yesterday and said: “It’s a lot trickier than it looked at the time.”

Syme and playing partner Liam Johnston of Dumfries prevailed 4&3 in their opening fourball against fellow Brits Rhys Enoch and Charlie Ford.

Women’s British Open winner Georgia Hall and Laura Davies saw off Spaniards Noemi Jimenez and Silvia Banon 5&4 with wins too for Catriona Matthew and Holly Clyburn plus Michelle Thomson and Meghan Maclaren.
