We had a really good competition and still got a personal best
BY ALAN ROBERTSON TOM DALEY’S decision to sit out the rest of this year means Grace Reid had to find a new partner for her European Championship title defence.
So the Edinburgh diver teamed up with Ross Haslam, Daley’s normal partner for the male events, as she aimed to repeat the glory of London two years ago in her home water.
But the new pairing’s bid fell just short as Germany took gold in the mixed pairs 3m springboard event at the Royal Commonwealth Pool.
Daley’s commitment to taking a career break so he could spend time with his baby son meant Reid went into yesterday’s event just eight weeks after her first time competing with her new teammate.
Although Lou Massenberg and Tina Punzel took the top step on the podium the Scot admits she wasn’t too gutted to end up with silver.
Reid said: “That was a tough field in there. We have been matching those guys at the World Cup and a lot of them are strong competitors throughout the World Series. To come away with a silver medal we’re really pleased.
“We didn’t have a perfect comp today, we had a really good one – and still got a personal best.”
Being slightly out of sync for the third dive cost the British pair but Reid still has the individual 3m springboard event and the women’s 3m synchronised with Katherine Torrance to come, meaning she can still bag a hat-trick of medals.
And the 22-year-old admits she’s relished competing on home soil.
Reid said: “Being back in Edinburgh has been really good. Even just familiar faces, that Scottish accent, it’s so comforting – and fans have been great.”
