Blues deal is Shrewd move for Docherty

-

BY ALAN MARSHALL RANGERS midfielder Greg Docherty is convinced dropping down to English League One can get his career heading in the right direction again.

The 21-year-old, who moved to Ibrox from Hamilton last winter, has joined Shrewsbury on a season- long loan after revealing Steven Gerrard told him he needed to get out and play matches.

Docherty, who made his debut in Shrews’ 2-1 defeat at Charlton on Saturday, said: “Coming down here, I want to play games, I want to experience this league. I know it’s a tough, relentless league with a lot of games but that’s what I want.

“I’m at the stage where I need to play. That’s what me and my manager at Rangers agreed on.

“I need to play games consistently to take me to that next step and coming down here can open a lot of doors for me.

“It was about taking my time and finding the right club and I got a good feeling after I spoke to the guys here. They’ve got really high expectations and it’s a nice family-run club from what I gather, and a nice area, so I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve spoken to guys that have played here before, one currently at Rangers – Connor Goldson.

“He told me it’s a lovely place and a great club and I just got a good feeling about coming down here.

“I’ve got a lot of energy, that’s my game.

“From speaking to the guys here it seems they base themselves on a lot of hard work and that’s how I learned my trade at my first club Hamilton.

“That’s what we were all about and I loved grinding out results and going home on a Saturday with a win knowing you’ve put the work in.

“There’s nothing better for me and I’m really looking forward to that.

“I think we could really push on, drive this team forward and see what happens again.”
