A 21-YEAR-OLD Scot has stunned judges at the All England Open Stone Skimming Championships with a record-breaking distance of 311ft.
Alex Lewis travelled nearly 200 miles from his home in Helensburgh, in Dunbartonshire, at the weekend to compete in the 10th anniversary of the event at National Trust Fell Foot Park on Windermere.
His incredible throw was almost 23ft more than the winning throw by Welshman Gareth Twamley last year.
Speaking on behalf of the All England Stone Skimming Championships’ organisers, South Cumbria Rivers Trust, Julius Barratt said: “We never imagined we would be celebrating our 10th anniversary with such an amazing demonstration of power and skill and a record of such an incredible distance.
“We are sure we will be seeing Alex win more championships in years to come but are also delighted to see some of the youngsters entering year after year and getting better and better.”
The World Stone Skimming Championships will take place on Sunday, September 23, on Easdale Island, near Oban.
