“I have a hunch StubHub might try to go legit in the mainstream somehow and set up a primary ticket-selling function because they know what they are doing. They have more of a legitimate status in North America, where they’re not seen as quite so exploitati­ve.”

Many fear the average tickets on primary sites will go up in price as Ticketmate­r try to plug a revenue gap, combining with artists to offer “Platinum” tickets near the front or dynamic pricing, with cheap seats at the back.

Sir Paul McCartney’s SSE Hydro show later this year sold out instantly – with Platinum tickets being dripped in each day for up to £700, with his management’s blessing.

Camp added: “We have never done Platinum and we won’t be doing it. Simple as that. You might have a bit of difference in the price of a ticket but you won’t ever catch us charging £600 for a ticket like some artists have done.

“We start out by deciding what we want Ed’s fans to pay, based on what’s fair. We will stick to that, we won’t be selling out.

“We want it to be a fair experience that is open to everyone on a level field. That underpins everything we are doing. We don’t want to be seen as pricing unfairly.
