Wright: My Saints will give Hoops Treble hell

-

BY ANTHONY HAGGERTY TOMMY WRIGHT has warned Celtic his St Johnstone side will relish the opportunity to shatter their treble Treble bid.

The Perth outfit were paired with the Hoops in the quarter-final of the Betfred Cup after beating Queen of the South 4-2 at Palmerston on Saturday.

Wright has yet to taste victory over Celtic since Brendan Rodgers took over the Parkhead club in 2016 but he’s revelling in the prospect of a giantkilling.

He said: “We’re playing the best side in the country. This is a great challenge.

“We will be massive underdogs but we will relish it as St Johnstone always try to compete against the better teams.

“In the five years that I have been manager of St Johnstone we have as good a record against them as any other club.

“Since Brendan has come in we have not got that elusive win but we have had victories against Celtic during my time here. We had two draws against them last season.

“When my players saw the home tie come out they would have been excited. Cup ties don’t get any better than that.”

In the other ties, Championship Ayr will face Rangers at Ibrox while Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes expects a “tough test” at Hibs.

Last season’s beaten finalists Motherwell travel to take on Craig Levein’s Hearts at Tynecastle with Steelmen gaffer Steve Robinson hopeful of booking their third successive semi-final spot.

He said: “This is a tie we feel we can progress in.”
