Watt: It’s crazy my face is painted on a Stagecoach in Perth already

-

BY GORDON BANNERMAN & FRANK GILFEATHER here they’d be putting my face on the back of a bus I would have thought it was a wind-up. “But it really has happened and it’s a good laugh. “The lads haven’t been taking the mickey too much about it. A few of them are jealous anyway! “Maybe if we do well this season then everyone will get their face on the back of one. “And the gaffer will probably get a statue built for him after the job he’s done here over the years.

“Maybe when they do that they’ll put my bus beside it because it will be clapped out by then and have plenty of miles on the clock!

“Wee things like that are nice, it makes you feel wanted.”

Watt admits training with the Dons last term after his departure from Belgian club Oud-Heverlee helped him hit the ground running in Perth.

Pittodrie boss Derek McInnes considered dealing him – and he hopes the decision doesn’t come back to haunt him today.

He said: “I always thought Tony was going to score goals if he could find the right club and play regularly.

“I’m pleased for him because we liked him being here.

“I was allowed to bring one striker in really and James Wilson was that striker. Unfortunately he has not been able to get on the pitch.

“I had a call to make on that and we also have to look at the emergence of Bruce Anderson.

“But I wanted real pace at the top end of the pitch and James will give us that when he is up and running.”

Watt added: “Everyone was brilliant with me when I was at Aberdeen. The staff were great and the players took me in and treated me like one of the boys.

“They tried to stitch me up and got me involved in all the stuff in the dressing room which was what I needed.

“It helped me. It put me in a routine and showed me I can really dedicate myself.”

Gary Mackay-Steven, who kicked off his career alongside Watt at Airdrie, is pleased his pal is back in form at Saints.

He said: “Tony is a goalscorer. He’s a threat and a handful for defenders. You need confidence as a player and he has got that in abundance.”
