YOBS TORCH TRIBUTE TO CAR CRASH VICTIM
Heartache as messages at roadside for tragic Jonny are set on fire
BY JACK AITCHISON HEARTLESS vandals have set fire to a memorial to a man who died in a fireball road crash.
The family of Jonny Smith are heartbroken after finding flags and messages left at the roadside had been damaged overnight.
Ground worker Jonny’s car was struck by a BMW X5 which had swerved to avoid a stolen Audi A3 speeding on the wrong side of the road.
Every week, Jonny’s mum Ellen Mcdaid visits a memorial at the scene of his death on Maybury Road in Edinburgh.
She is still urging people to help identify the person responsible for the crash through the #JusticeFor Jonny campaign.
But on Sunday the tributes were set on fire and what looked like a leftover can of lighter fluid was found.
Ellen said: “It breaks my heart that someone would do this – but I’ll have this sorted in no time and if it happens again I’ll sort it again.
“They can throw anything at me, I’ll still rebuild it. This is a mark of respect to Jonny. He is in our hearts and minds – they can’t destroy that.”
The #JusticeForJonny Facebook page added: “Honestly, it’s as if we are just tainted. Has our family not been through enough?
“We don’t ask much, we don’t want much – just a few metres with a few flags filled with messages from all that loved Jonny.
“Is that really too much to ask for that, a place we can remember what was stolen from us?”
