HIBS CLOSE IN ON DUTCH STAR NELOM

-

FROM BACK PAGE years at De Kuip. Nelom featured in the Champions League last season, playing in their 4-0 group-stage defeat to Manchester City.

The Dutchman, 27, then spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Sparta Rotterdam where he played under former Rangers manager Dick Advocaat.

But he was unable to stop Sparta being relegated from the Eredivisie.

Nelom, capped twice in 2013 when he played in friendlies against China and Indonesia, can sign immediately for Hibs.

Lennon’s side got back on track in the Premiership at the weekend with a 3-2 victory over Kilmarnock.

And the Hibees boss insists Flo Kamberi can help them pick up the pace after netting the winner.

The 23-year-old striker had been sidelined by a knee injury since the 3-0 Europa League defeat away to Molde on August 16.

The Swiss ace continued rehab back in his homeland before returning with a late penalty on Saturday.

The victory was Hibs’ first in four league outings and Lennon said: “We’re better with Flo in the team. Sometimes he was a bit rusty but other times when we played through him, we were very productive. It has been a frustrating time for him in the last month or so.

“Any good moves came through Flo and he’s such an important player for us.

“The goal will give his confidence a shot in the arm, not that he needed it.

“But to take the penalty under pressure speaks volumes and hopefully we can get him up and running now because we miss him.”

Six Euro ties and John McGinn’s departure for Aston Villa contributed to a difficult start.

And Lennon said: “At the moment we’re a work in progress because of the changes, the turnover of players and guys getting up to speed.”

Aussie Mark Milligan made an 18-minute debut while on-loan Man City winger Thomas Agyepong made a second appearance.

He said: “Mark has been very impressive in training. That’s his first competitive outing since the World Cup. He was outstanding.

“Agyepong came on and did great.”
