‘We would be ready to rule tomorrow’
LABOUR are ready to topple Theresa May over Brexit and launch a 15-year revolution in government, John McDonnell has vowed.
The Shadow Chancellor said the party are prepared to seize power before Christmas – and serve three terms in Downing Street.
McDonnell added: “We’re ready.
“We could be in place tomorrow. I think the third term will probably be our most exciting.”
Labour will this week set out radical plans to: ●Nationalise Britain’s water, rail, energy and mail within the first five years of government. ●Boost workers’ incomes by £500 a year by ramping up employee ownership of big firms. ●Launch a national care service to tackle the social care crisis and end cuts to budgets ●Plough billions of pounds into the NHS.
McDonnell, who will deliver a keynote speech today to the Labour party conference, said: “I want the election as soon as possible. But whenever it comes, we’re ready for it – and we’ll win.”
Outlining Labour’s plans for government, McDonnell added: “We will put money into people’s pockets, provide a real living wage, restore trade union rights, end privatisation and start investing in public services, start investing in the infrastructure that will give us jobs.”
McDonnell launched a blistering attack on Theresa May over her handling of Brexit.
He said: “She has proved herself incapable of negotiating her way out of a paper bag.
“She’s got a responsibility to the country to go.”
Asked whether he believed the Prime Minister would secure a deal with the EU, McDonnell said: “No. She’ll get some form of deal, most probably some form of fudge.
“The key test for me is will (the deal) protect jobs and the economy and from what we’re seeing – it won’t. We’ve got companies now going down to three-day working. This is because of the uncertainty caused by the Tories.
“So what we’re saying to Theresa May is, accept you’re not going to get a deal that will protect jobs and the economy, move to one side and let us do the negotiations.
“If not, move over, let’s have a general election.”
