WIFE-KILLER IS GIVEN SEX DRUG VIAGRA IN CARSTAIRS
Female staff at high-security hospital raise safety fears over prescription to ‘insane’ stab frenzy husband Cumming
A KILLER who stabbed his wife to death in a frenzied attack is being given Viagra for solo sex sessions in Scotland’s state hospital.
Neil Cumming, who has been detained at Carstairs since 2012, is said to have demanded the drug – funded by taxpayers – and was given it earlier this month. The move has caused anger among female hospital staff, who say it puts them at greater risk. The Viagra controversy is the first in a series of Record revelations which raise concerns over the hospital.
CARSTAIRS staff reacted with “complete shock” when they were instructed to hand wife killer Neil Cumming Viagra, sources told the Record.
As well as sharing fears over safety, particularly for female employees, they had to field requests for the sex drug from other patients once word started to filter round the hospital.
Cumming, 50, was sent to the hospital after he was acquitted of killing wife Jane, whom he’d stabbed 36 times at their home in Longforgan, near Dundee, in 2011, on the grounds he was insane at the time.
After the brutal attack, he tried to commit suicide by driving at 100mph on the A90 Perth to Dundee road before crashing into the back of a lorry. Several innocent people were also injured in the accident.
Sources at the hospital told of their disbelief on learning Cumming had demanded the anti-impotency pills and been approved for them.
One source said: “Cumming is quite demanding. He’s an aloof character who keeps a diary of everything that happens in the hospital and displays paranoid behaviour often.
“He is constantly asking the staff for various requests and Viagra is just something else he wanted. Nobody could actually believe it. It’s not as if he’s getting conjugal visits. It’s prescribed at the weekends for him in his room alone.”
Another source said: “Some of the female staff voiced objections to this. Here is someone who has killed before and has serious mental health problems, is paranoid and we are worried he could become dangerous with heightened sexual feelings.
“It’s ridiculous he is taking this drug. He thinks the hospital and the staff should revolve around him and becomes a bit of a complainer if things aren’t done quick enough or to his liking. Staff have been subject to complaints from him for silly things.”
The source added: “The staff concerns fell on deaf ears. Apart from that, what about the extra cost to the NHS? It’s not an urgent medical condition, it’s purely for his own needs. And now other patients are demanding it so it will be difficult to refuse them if someone else is being allowed it. It needs stopped.”
Cumming, who is particularly friendly with another wife killer, David Lilburn, has previously tried to sue Tayside health board for £250,000 after claiming they failed to properly
treat his mental illness before he carried out the attack on his 40-year-old wife.
He had been admitted to Carseview mental health unit at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee five months before the killing and thought he was being spied on at his work at the city’s Michelin tyre factory. His wife had also tried to have him admitted to Carseview just days before her death.
A spokeswoman for the hospital said: “Due to data protection/ confidentiality we are unable to provide any information on specific patients or staff, past or present.”
Scottish Conservative mental health spokeswoman Annie Wells said: “It’s plainly wrong that an individual as dangerous as this is prescribed something like Viagra.
“This isn’t a medical necessity and it’s clearly going to cause fear among staff – especially females – who already carry out a risky and brave job.”
