Dele does it for Spurs on Dons return

-

ON his return to Milton Keynes it just had to be Dele Alli who was the matchwinning hero.

The captain for the night took and scored the decisive penalty for a 4-2 win over Watford to finally send Spurs into the last 16.

Spurs keeper Paulo Gazzaniga had made up for his earlier gaffe by saving two penalties from Etienne Capoue and Domingos Quina in the shootout.

This third-round clash was moved to Dele’s old club with Wembley unavailable and Spurs’ new home still not ready. And he had to score twice from 12 yards to ensure it was a happy homecoming.

After Spurs trailed to Isaac Success’s 46th-minute opener, Christian Kabasele brought Dele down, earning the defender a red card just three minutes after he came on, and the skipper levelled from the spot in 82 minutes.

Erik Lamela fired Spurs into an 86th-minute lead but a howler from Gazzaniga allowed former Spurs ace Capoue to make it 2-2 after 90 minutes before Mauricio Pochettino’s men eventually progressed on penalties.

Elsewhere, West Ham hammered League Two Macclesfield 8-0 for their biggest win since 1983.

Grady Diangana and Robert Snodgrass both scored twice as the Hammers ripped apart the Cheshire side who are bottom of the fourth tier without a win.

Danny Welbeck scored twice as Arsenal beat Championship Brentford 3-1.

Daryl Murphy was on target in Nottingham Forest’s 3-2 defeat of Stoke.
