End their misery.. and the country’s
THERESA May must surely wonder if it’s really worth the bother.
Hardly a day goes by without a world leader humiliating her over her Brexit plans.
And on the other days, it’s members of her own party.
What a dreadful way to tee up the Tory party conference in Birmingham.
But that’s where she’ll have to stand at the lectern, with her fingers crossed that the stage set won’t collapse around her – again.
May will have to deliver a rallying call to a deeply divided party which counts sneering figures like Boris Johnson and pretend-intelligent MP Jacob Rees Mogg among its number.
The Tories have consistently let this country down from their wrong-headed policies on welfare, to the inexcusable mess of Brexit.
Their moment in the conference limelight comes a week after Jeremy Corbyn addressed his supporters in Labour.
It was typically Labour – self-inflicted damage and rousing speeches in roughly equal measure.
Corbyn says he’s convinced there’s another election coming and he’ll be the one to pick up the pieces.
While it’s great someone has the guts to take over, it’s not entirely clear what he’ll do with our fragile constitutional set-up either.
The Tories are at war with themselves and don’t look fit to carry on governing.
But Labour have not managed to transfer anger at the Government to support for Corbyn as a clear alternative.
They now must demonstrate they have what it takes to put this Government out of its misery.
