‘The polis find out Rangers, Aberdeen, Hearts & Celtic will all be in Glasgow. Full of bevvy. On the same day’

Social media users have a laugh as supporters prepare for footie fiasco

FOOTBALL fans reacted to the Hampden double semi-final fiasco in the only way they know how – by taking the mickey. The games in the Betfred Cup – the traditional league cup – will both be played at Hampden on Sunday, October 28. Aberdeen will play Rangers at noon and Hearts v Celtic kicks off at 7.45pm. The Scottish Professional Football League announced the unprecedented move on Thursday to cope with a fixture backlog. The move has been branded “nonsensical” by MSP James Kelly, amid fears the double-fixture could spark chaos as 100,000 rival fans descend on the southside of Glasgow. Scotrail have also expressed “disappointment”, saying they weren’t consulted. But Scots footie fans saw the funny side. Many took to social media to give the decision the red card.

One post shows a group of wrestlers fighting in a ring with the caption “Scenes outside Hampden Park on Scottish Cup Semi Finals day.”

Another fan posted footage of a PC covering his face with his hand, and wrote: “The polis finding out Rangers, Aberdeen, Hearts and Celtic will all be in Glasgow, full of bevvy on the same day.”

The Record reported yesterday how Kelly, who led the successful campaign against offensive behaviour at football law, has urged a rethink.

The move has come about because both Old Firm teams are in Europa League action on the Thursday before the semi-final weekend.

The SPFL rejected the idea of taking one match to Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Kelly said: “This is an absolutely nonsensical decision and it must be reconsidered.”

North East Lib Dem MSP Mike Rumbles said Aberdeen fans have been given a “raw deal” because their game kicks off before a train arrives in Glasgow from the North East.
