The Joy of no eggs...

-

THE GREAT BRITISH

BAKE OFF Channel 4, 8pm AS if baking a cake under pressure wasn’t tough enough, imagine doing it without half the ingredients? That’s pretty much what happens in tonight’s episode, as the six bakers face Vegan Week.

It’s a Bake Off first – a unique idea, but not necessarily a good one. No eggs, no milk, no butter, no honey. No taste? Sorry vegans, we should give it a chance first. But the contestants are feeling the pressure. “Can we have kebab week soon?” asks Jon, speaking for the nation.

Meanwhile, Noel tells Kim-Joy: “You look like you might know your way around a vegan kitchen. You just have that air about you.” She isn’t vegan, by the way.

Their first task is to make eight savoury tartlets with two different fillings. “We set this challenge because it’s difficult,” says Paul. Thanks for clarifying that one.

It’s a struggle and the words “greasy”, “misshapen” and “gluey” are mentioned. But it’s all worth it to hear French Manon say “tartlets”.

For the technical, the bakers must whip up a vegan pavlova with coconut cream and tropical fruit.

“Is there a Paul Hollywood vegan cookbook?” smirks Noel later. “Nope,” retorts Paul. He’s clearly not a fan.

The showstopper challenge is a vegan celebration cake. It must be inventive, visually exciting and er, made from plant-based products. Watch out for a little chat between Rahul and Noel about their grandmas that will make you want to hug Rahul. Again. And the showstoppers suffer in the heat, leading to the threat of catastrophe.
