Christian bakers gay cake victory

-

BY SIAN HARRISON and CATHY GORDON THE Christian owners of a bakery have won an appeal at the UK’s highest court over a finding that they discriminated against a man by refusing to make a cake decorated with the words “Support Gay Marriage”.

Five Supreme Court justices allowed a challenge by the McArthur family in a unanimous ruling in London yesterday.

The legal action was originally brought against Ashers bakery in Belfast by gay rights activist Gareth Lee, who won his case initially and on appeal.

Announcing the decision, court president Lady Hale said: “The bakers could not refuse to supply their goods to Mr Lee because he was a gay man or supported gay marriage but that is quite different from obliging them to supply a cake iced with a message with which they profoundly disagreed.” ALEXANDER Buchan and family are ranked 804 in the 2018 Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated net worth of £147million.

Behind Peterhead-based Lunar Fishing Company, the family run a fleet of multi-million-pound supertrawlers capable of hauling in huge catches.

But they also expanded into fish processing and the provision of freezing and cold storage factories in Peterhead.
