Laid-off staff learn factory still open
BY STEPHEN STEWART FURIOUS food workers were stunned to get texts offering them jobs at their old factory – months after they were laid off.
In April, The 2 Sisters Food Group closed the “heavily loss-making” poultry processing plant in Cambuslang, near Glasgow, with the loss of 450 jobs.
But former staff have been shocked to get texts from agencies effectively offering them their old jobs back.
Former worker Scott Stevenson, who unloaded lorries at the site, said: “It’s a disgrace. It wouldn’t surprise me if they were taking people back on worse terms.
“I was made redundant on August 3. I was asked if I wanted to stay on but I declined as the given date of closure was August 31.
“I have since learned that the factory is still open and I’ve received a message from a recruitment agency asking if I would like to return.”
In April, politicians said it was devastating news for the workforce, while the Unite union said they would seek legal counsel on alleged consultation breaches.
Then, 2 Sisters told their Cambuslang workers the only way to keep their jobs was to be redeployed to Norwich – 380 miles away.
The factory doors were supposed to have shut for the last time in September.
Scott added: “I have heard of workers receiving £2000 bonuses for each month they stay in the factory. I was not offered this incentive.
“This is a disgrace for the union Unite. They have allowed this to happen.”
The 2 Sisters Food Group were unavailable for comment.
