McGregor set to pull a fast win

-

YOUNG gun Lee McGregor insists he’s ready to make history by becoming Scotland’s quickest champion.

The Saughton speed merchant is looking to land the Commonwealth bantamweight crown in only his fifth pro bout against Thomas Essomba at London’s York Hall tonight.

The 21-year-old only stepped out of the amateur ranks last year but made mincemeat out of his first four opponents with a clean sweep of KOs.

McGregor admits he’ll have his work cut out against tough nut Essomba as the former English champ has never been stopped.

But he’s determined to send out a warning to the division by getting his hands on the belt.

McGregor said: “Camp has been fantastic and I am certain I will be crowned Commonwealth champion.

“That belt is coming back to Edinburgh with me. It’s a huge show of faith and a risk.

“But I’ll show everyone that it was the right risk to take and what I can do by leaving with that title after just five fights. Thomas is a tough man and I’ve got to be switched on all the way through.

“I want to make a statement by becoming the first man to stop him.

“This fight is a chance to show my skills and prove that I’m one of the best in Britain.”

McGregor is hoping victory will set up an all-Scottish showdown with British champion Kash Farooq – but he won’t take his eye off the prize tonight.

Essomba has lost four of his 12 bouts but the former Commonwealth flyweight champion never been down.

He said: “I have been fighting like a man possessed in the gym. McGregor is clearly talented but this fight is too soon for him.”
