Humphrey hails Well on retiring

- BY BEN RAMAGE

FORMER Motherwell winger Chris Humphrey has described his time at Fir Park as the best four years of his life.

The 31-year-old, who played 163 games for Well, has announced his retirement from football.

And in a statement he released on social media, Humphrey said: “Massive thank you to all the Motherwell fans. I probably had the best four years of my life up there.

“I enjoyed every minute of playing for your special club. We achieved a lot of things together and you non-stop cheered and supported me the whole time I was there.

“Also, I went through a really hard time when I first came to the club with losing our son and everyone at the club were great. I’ll never forget that.”

Humphrey joined Well from Shrewsbury in 2009, making his debut in a Europa League tie against Albanians Flamurtari. He went on to net nine times and started in the Scottish Cup Final loss to Celtic in 2011.

The winger also turned out against Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifiers in 2012-13.

He moved to Preston in 2013, enjoying promotion to the Championship during a three-year spell.

He returned north for a short stint at Hibs before moving to Bury. He has now been forced to call it a day due to injury.

Humphrey said: “I picked up an injury two to three years ago and it’s never been right since.

“I’ve been playing for the last year with a lot of pain and can’t do it any more.”
