Mum’s the word in elegant cover-up
GOOD NEWS
are all said be “delighted” about the news. Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, told the world about the baby with an announcement on the Kensington Palace Twitter account yesterday morning.
Prime Minister Theresa May was quick to send her best wishes, tweeting: “My warmest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the happy news they are expecting a baby in the Spring. “Wishing them all the best.” Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, tweeted: “Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on their happy news. Prayers for them in the months ahead.”
On Instagram, The Kingdom Choir, who sang at Harry and Meghan’s wedding, said: “We’d just like to send our congratulations to the beautiful couple, the Duke and Duchess Of Sussex on their recent announcement.”
Woody Johnson, the US ambassador to the UK, tweeted: “Happy news to wake up to on a Monday morning – congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”
Labour MP Chuka Umunna, Tory Andrea Jenkyns and the DUP’s Emma Little-Pengelly also sent congratulations, as did businesswoman Karren Brady and TV personalities such as Geordie Shore’s Gaz Beadle and Vicky Pattison, presenter June Sarpong and YouTuber Zoella. Even anti-monarchy group Republic said: “Congratulations to the couple on their happy news.”
Kensington Palace followed the announcement by thanking the public for “all of the support” the couple had received since their wedding, adding they were “delighted to be able to share this happy news”.
Harry and Meghan have made no secret of their wish to start a family.
In an interview in 2016, Meghan said becoming a mother was on her “bucket list”. On a royal tour in New Zealand in 2015, Harry, then aged 30, spoke of his hopes of starting a family. He said: “Of course, I would love to have kids right now. But there’s a process that one has to go through.” The ever-controversial Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, 59, fresh from her brief reintroduction to the royal “Firm” at daughter Eugenie’s marriage, chose an ill-timed moment to tweet a picture from Friday’s celebrations – less than 30 minutes after news broke of Meghan’s pregnancy. An hour later, Eugenie’s dad, Prince Andrew, 58, tweeted a message with a picture of his ex-wife, thought to be from his Royal Lodge home in Windsor, wishing her a happy birthday . AS royal watchers looked for signs of a baby on the way, Meghan used a number of fashion tricks to hide them.
At a concert in London on September 6, her Jason Wu midi had added curves to keep us guessing, while in Sussex on October 3, a dark skirt helped in the cover-up.
At a sports event in Loughborough on September 24, she covered her belly with complicated folds, while at an art exhibition in London on September 25 her Givenchy dress had voluminous sleeves to distract us.
Even yesterday, on arrival in Sydney, Meghan was clutching two purple folders to her stomach.
Now at last she can breathe out and show her bump to the world.
