Rapist preyed on woman as she slept

AN IT boss who filmed himself raping a woman as she slept was yesterday jailed for six years.

Adrian Mickels regularly preyed on the woman, including at his £1million home in Edinburgh’s affluent Ravelston area.

A judge heard how the victim was later “disgusted” after discovering footage on Mickels’ laptop of him raping her.

Police were alerted after the woman told a friend what had happened.

Mickels, 43, pled guilty last month to a rape charge at the High Court in Glasgow.

He was jailed for six years and put on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.

Passing sentence, judge BY ASHLIE McANALLY Lord Matthews said: “This was an appalling breach of trust and gross betrayal.”

He added the recordings “gave an opportunity to rape her again and again in your mind as and when you chose.”

The attacks took place between 2011 and 2016.

As well as the house in Ravelston, Mickels stayed at a flat in the capital’s New Town.

He more recently worked as an IT business manager and the woman was often in his company during that time.

The crimes emerged after the victim told a friend in April last year that Mickels had raped her. This sparked a probe and the woman told police she had been the victim of “numerous” attacks.

She recalled waking up to find Mickels having sex with her about 10 times.

Prosecutor Owen Mullan said she did not feel “comfortable” confronting Mickels at the time.

The woman told police that, after finding intimate photos of her on Mickels’ laptop, she watched a clip of him raping her as she slept.

She later confronted Mickels, who told her: “It is better looking at you than porn.”

Defence QC Ronnie Renucci said: “Mickels expresses embarrassment and disgust in relation to his behaviour.”
