IT’SMYCOPY-WRIGHT

THE League Cup was dangled in front of Scott Wright as a kid – and now the Dons striker aims to glisten in its glory.

The Scotland Under-21 striker was in his first year as a fulltime pro when Aberdeen won the Cup on penalties against Inverness in 2014.

He revelled in the post-match celebrations at the hotel, even if he was too young to hit the town with top-team stars later.

But it’s the memory of an exchange with Derek McInnes that sticks with him and is why he’s determined to help see off Rangers on Sunday and book his side’s place in the Betfred BY GARY RALSTON Cup Final. Wright said: “My family dropped me off at the function following the 2014 final and everyone was having their pictures taken with the trophy.

“The gaffer came up to me with the Cup and said, ‘How do you feel?’ I told him it was great and he said, ‘Hopefully we can get more of these at this club’.

“It definitely motivated me to want more. That season I was on the fringes, hadn’t made my debut and only trained here and there with the first team.

“It was a case of, ‘If this is what is there for me, I want more of it’. I focused on getting my head down, training hard and proving to the manager I deserved to be in his team.

“The gaffer spoke before about how positive he is about it and you can tell how hungry he is to win trophies here.

“It was brilliant to be involved four years ago as it had been such a long time since we’d won a cup. It was such a big thing for the city as well.

“After the function the rest of the boys went out on the town and I had to go home as I was just a little pup.

“I have great memories but I would love to be properly involved in the team. My mum and dad are Aberdeen fans and have spoken to me about the glory days. Hopefully, we can win the Cup and I can say I’ve been a part of it. If called on Sunday I’ll be ready to do my job.”

The 21-year-old’s return from an ankle injury after two months is timely as it bolsters attacking options available to McInnes.

Wright returned from the bench in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Hearts and his pace is an asset for the Dons through the middle or out wide as they bid to set about Rangers with verve and tempo.

He added: “It was a disappointing result but there’s no better game to bounce back.”
