NEW Film Detective Pikachu is the first time that the Pokemon craze has translated to mainstream entertainment.
But in the world of animation, trading cards and computer games, Pikachu has been one of the biggest fictional characters for decades - and the one Pokemon character everyone can recognise.
The cuddly looking wee creature is also one of the most fearsome pocket monsters in the gaming universe, capable of great bursts of electro power, and fights for his trainer Ash in Pokemon battles across the TV shows and games.
He first made his appearance in the Japanese Pokemon cards in 1996 and appeared in the first Pokemon game for Nintendo’s Gameboy in the same year.
